Possible Local Spiral Counterparts to Compact Blue Galaxies at Intermediate Redshift
نویسنده
چکیده
We identify nearby disk galaxies with optical structural parameters similar to those of intermediateredshift compact blue galaxies. By comparing H I and optical emission-line widths, we show that the optical widths substantially underestimate the true kinematic widths of the local galaxies. By analogy, optical emission-line widths may underrepresent the masses of intermediate-z compact objects. For the nearby galaxies, the compact blue morphology is the result of tidally-triggered central star formation: we argue that interactions and minor mergers may cause apparently compact morphology at higher redshift. A Search for Low Surface Brightness Structure around Compact Narrow Emission Line Galaxies
As the most extreme members of the rapidly evolving faint blue galaxy population at intermediate redshift, the compact narrow emission line galaxies (CNELGs) are intrinsically luminous ( 22PMBP 18) with narrow emission line widths (30 km s 1P P125 km s ). Their nature is heavily debated: they may be low-mass starbursting galaxies that will fade to present-day dwarf galaxies or bursts of star fo...

متن کاملA Quantitative Morphological Comparison of Late-type Galaxies in Clusters and the Field at Intermediate Redshift
We present a comparison of late-type galaxies (Sa and later) in intermediate redshift clusters and the field using images from the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Cluster and field galaxies are selected by matching photometric and spectroscopic catalogs of four cluster fields: CL0152-1357, CL1056-0337 (MS1054), CL1604+4304, and CL1604+4321. Concentrati...
متن کاملThe Evolution of the Tully–fisher Relation of Spiral Galaxies1
We present the B-band Tully–Fisher relation (TFR) of 60 late–type galaxies with redshifts 0.1 − 1. The galaxies were selected from the FORS Deep Field with a limiting magnitude of R = 23. Spatially resolved rotation curves were derived from spectra obtained with FORS2 at the VLT. High-mass galaxies with vmax & 150 km/s show little evolution, whereas the least massive systems in our sample are b...
